New standards and inspections

Since 1 April 2018, the new Health and Social Care Standards have coming into effect, and replace the old National Care Standards. The Care Inspectorate is required, by law, to consider the standards when making decisions during our inspections and other scrutiny and improvement work.

The standards can be found here. We encourage people to refer to these when planning and delivering care.

We have previously written to all care services and partnerships to set out our expectations about the standards. You can see a copy of this letter here.

Over the coming months, the Care Inspectorate will be testing and evaluating different ways to carry out its inspections of care services, starting with care homes for old people.

As part of implementing the new Health and Social Care Standards, the Care Inspectorate has reviewed the adult to child ratios in Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) settings and issued the guidance.  This reflects the ratios that existed under the previous National Care Standards, with some additional advice included within the guidance.  The guidance will be reviewed in May 2019.
