The SSSC, in partnership with NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and the Scottish Government, has commissioned research into the readiness of health and social care organisations for a culture of openness and learning.

As part of this research, four workshops have been organised to explore this issue further.

  • 6 March 2019 – Best Western Queens Hotel, Leonard Stret, Perth PH2 8HB
  • 7 March 2019 – Scottish Government, Victoria Quay, Edinburgh EH6 6QQ
  • 15 March 2019 – Scottish Government, Atlantic Quay, 150 Broomielaw, Glasgow G2 8LU
  • 19 March 2019 – Centre for Healthcare Science, Old Perth Rd, Inverness IV2 3JH

A culture of openness and learning should:

  • support improvement for people accessing services
  • improve their experience of using services
  • improve the experience of staff working in organisations
  • increase openness and transparency
  • make sure that local and national learning systems work together
  • improve outcomes by delivering value from available resources
  • increase efficiency
  • have a strong focus on innovation, improvement, collaboration and accountability.

However, there is still some fear among staff and organisations about how we respond when things go wrong and people are potentially harmed. We need to explore these issues further to fully understand what is behind this fear.

The workshops, facilitated by Dorothy Armstrong of DA Professional Limited, will use appreciative inquiry to explore openness and learning and will include the following.

Sharing good practice

  • What’s working well?
  • What could an organisation which has a positive culture of openness and learning look like?
  • What education and support are needed?
  • What are the key learning points?

Who should attend?

The workshops are for frontline staff, managers, senior managers and executive level staff across health, social care and social work.

There is a maximum of 25 places available for each workshop.
