The ELECTRIC Trial: Transcutaneous Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation (TPTNS) as a treatment when caring for older people living with urinary incontinence.

It is widely recognised that urinary incontinence is common in older people living in care homes. These problems can be distressing and embarrassing for the person experiencing care. There is also acknowledgement that there are not many options available for the treatment of urinary incontinence in older people, especially for those older people also living with dementia.

The research into Transcutaneous Posterior Tibial Nerve Stimulation (TPTNS) aims to prove that older people can improve their bladder function through stimulating the tibial nerve. Some care homes across the country are taking part in this research trial conducted by the Department of Nursing at Glasgow Caledonian University and funded by the NHS National Institute for Health Research (NIHR).
