We’re looking for people who are passionate about high-quality social care, social work and justice services

The Care Inspectorate is recruiting, right across Scotland for Inspectors and Strategic inspectors. We are also recruiting a Service Manager (Strategic Scrutiny). If you’re an expert in your field, we’d love to hear from you.

About us

We are Scotland’s scrutiny and improvement body for social care and social work services, identifying what is working well and what needs to get better. Our role is not just to inspect services and tell people about what we find, but to support improvement, innovation and change. Across social care, social work, children’s services, early learning, and justice, we are developing world-class scrutiny and improvement approaches that put people who experience care at the heart of everything we do. We are looking for talented people to join our inspection teams. We are looking for specialists who really understand how to put people’s needs, rights and choices at the heart of delivering social services – and how to lead improvement too. As a public body, our 600 staff work across the public, voluntary and private sector. We have offices across Scotland and many of our staff work from home.

About you

Where you live in Scotland doesn’t matter. What counts is what you bring. Whether early or established in your career, you will share our determination that care, social work and justice services should work well for people – every time. You’ll be confident about what good quality looks like, and how to deliver it. You’ll be good at analysing information, working with a wide range of people, and be confident at leading improvement. You’ll currently be working, or have significant experience in, social work, social care, health, children’s services, adult services, community justice, specialist policing relevant to our role and remit, early learning, child or adult protection, financial / strategic planning (in the near future), or community learning and development. You may already be registered with a professional body like the SSSC, NMC or GTC. We are really happy to consider secondments for a minimum period of 1 year.  About the roles

Our strategic inspectors work with local authorities, health and social care partnerships, regional improvement collaboratives, community planning partnerships, and community justice partners. In this role, you’ll assess how well services are working at a strategic level. You’ll be as comfortable talking to people about their personal experience of services as you are discussing improvement plans with a chief officer. You’ll lead strands of work on behalf of the Care Inspectorate. The salary for the post is £58.5k and we are recruiting up to 8 posts.  Shortly we will be looking for a Strategic Inspector, with specialist experience in financial / strategic planning – please check out our website for future vacancies.

Our care inspectors work with care services: childminders, nurseries, care homes, care at home, housing support and a host of other specialist services. A specialist in your field, you may have helped lead a service, and have a really strong track record in delivering quality. You’ll be adept at leading improvement and influencing others. You’ll work with people experiencing care, care service managers, local authorities, and health and staff from social care partnerships. Salaries range from £30k - £38K depending on your experience. We are recruiting up to 20 posts across Scotland this year.

We are also recruiting one service manager – strategic scrutiny. This senior role is responsible for leading a team of about ten strategic inspectors across Scotland. Reporting directly to the chief inspector, you will be confident at leading people to deliver excellent quality, and providing support and constructive challenge to senior officers. Impactful and articulate, you may already play a leadership role in your own organisation and be looking for the opportunity to work in a national position. The salary is fixed at £65,001. We are particularly interested in people with a background in justice services.

The benefits of working with the Care Inspectorate We strive to be a great employer, knowing that pay is only one part of that. You’ll have a lot of autonomy to manage your own work and use the professional skills you’ve honed during your career – but in new ways. Starting on day one, our learning and development support will help you become confident in the craft of scrutiny and in supporting improvement. Because a lot of your role is about sharing effective practice across Scotland, the impact you can have on experiences and outcomes for people is really significant. As part of a team, you won’t have line management responsibilities – but will likely draw on management and leadership skills you’ve developed in the past. We’re proud to be a progressive, supportive employer, and this includes opportunities to work flexibly. If you’ve got the right skills, we’d be happy to discuss part-time roles, compressed hours, or working from home.
