The healthy living award is a national award which rewards caterers who make it easier for their customers to eat healthily. The award is supported by the NHS Health Scotland and the Scottish Government.

There are a number of care homes who currently hold the award and understand the importance of improving of health and wellbeing of their residents and staff through achieving the award criteria.

To achieve the award there are certain conditions which must be met and these are based around the general principals of a healthy balanced diet and include:

  • Keeping levels of fat, salt and sugar to a minimum in the food you serve.
  • Make fruit and vegetables available.
  • Make starchy foods the main part of most meals.
  • Make at least 50% of the food you serve using healthier ingredients and cooking methods, in line with specific healthy living criteria.
