Childsmile is a national programme designed to improve the oral health of children in Scotland and reduce inequalities both in dental health and access to dental services.
The initiative is funded by the Scottish Government and since 2011, all elements have been delivered in Health Board areas throughout Scotland.
This includes:
- Childsmile Core Programme - currently available across Scotland for every child
- Childsmile Practice
- Childsmile Nursery and School
Childsmile Nursery and School is a toothbrushing programme that is delivered on a daily basis in most nurseries across Scotland. The programme is delivered by:
- Supervised daily toothbrushing programme in all nurseries and priority schools.
- Oral health education for children in schools and nurseries
- Advice and information for parents and carers to help them care for their childs teeth.
- Free dental packs, with toothbrush and toothpaste.
- Flouride varnish applications to children's teeth twice a year in priority nurseries and schools.
