This one day event on 25 April, certificated by The University of Edinburgh, will provide staff working in health and social care with information, support and resources to facilitate training about learning disability and dementia in their own organisation.

It has been designed for those who are in a position to carry out local training of staff or other trainers.

The course aims to:

  • enable participants to deliver the Supporting Derek training programme locally
  • to support staff who work with people with a learning disability and dementia
  • to increase the knowledge, motivation and confidence of staff who deliver training about learning disability and dementia, especially if training is not their primary role.
  • The content of the pack includes information about understanding
  • learning disability and dementia plus specific issues of
  • communication, the impact of the environment, pain and
  • the importance of supporting friendships.

Those attending the day will become familiar with the content of the pack and will be supported to develop their own one day programme for local delivery using a cascade approach.
